Shiitake + Maitake

Edible Mushrooms Show Promising Antitumor Effects When Taken Orally

ByCody McElrea March 26, 2025September 6, 2025

A landmark study conducted in Japan explored the antitumor potential of common edible mushrooms, such as Shiitake (Lentinus edodes) and Maitake (Grifola frondosa), when administered orally to tumor-bearing mice. By supplementing standard feed with 10–30% powdered fruiting bodies, researchers observed significant reductions in tumor growth—up to 58.3% with Shiitake and 43.3% with Maitake in mice with Sarcoma-180. This demonstrates that the mushrooms’ effects are not limited to injectable extracts but can be effective through daily diet.

Notably, the study found that timing and composition of mushroom feed played key roles. When administered simultaneously with tumor implantation, suppression reached up to 72.4%. Further experiments confirmed that both polysaccharides (like β-glucans) and lipids present in the mushrooms contributed to the observed tumor inhibition. Once both components were removed, the suppressive effect disappeared entirely—highlighting the synergistic nature of whole mushroom compounds in supporting immune responses and slowing tumor development.

Beyond Shiitake and Maitake, other mushrooms such as Tremella fuciformis, Enokitake, and Hiratake also demonstrated antitumor effects—some reaching over 80% tumor growth inhibition. This study supports the idea that regular consumption of functional mushrooms may help activate immune cells like macrophages and T-cells, potentially playing a role in natural cancer prevention strategies.

Our harvesters don’t stop once snow hits the groun Our harvesters don’t stop once snow hits the ground ;)

Winter harvesting offers unique advantages, for both the forest and the Chaga itself:

• Better access to remote areas

Frozen ground, snowshoes, skis, and snowmobiles allow us to reach areas that are inaccessible during warmer months, without disturbing wetlands or soft forest floors.

• Easier to spot

With leaves and undergrowth gone, Chaga stands out clearly against birch bark and white snow, reducing unnecessary damage to surrounding trees and minimizing over-harvesting.

• Lower moisture, cleaner harvest

Cold, dry conditions naturally reduce moisture content, helping preserve the integrity of the mushroom from harvest to processing.

At TruNorth Naturals, winter harvesting isn’t just a season; it’s a stewardship practice rooted in respect for land, timing, and long-term forest health.

Mornings in the bush look a little different these Mornings in the bush look a little different these days; I’ve got Eli bundled up on my chest and we head out into the woods, letting his mom get a few extra hours of sleep after being up most of the night nursing him.

We’ve been out at sunrise chasing partridge, gathering birch polypore, and soaking in the sounds of the northern woods.

Last week, we came upon a massive bull moose; antlers wide, standing proud in the marsh. A moment I’ll never forget.

He may be small, but I hope Eli grows up knowing what it means to walk with respect for the wild; to harvest with care, to listen, and to understand that the forest provides when you treat it with gratitude.

Cooler days, no bugs, and the scent of autumn drifting through the bush; fall brings a whole new kind of forest life.

In Northern Ontario, autumn is prime time for fungi:

🌿 Birch polypore is flushing on aging birch, carrying centuries of traditional medicinal use.

🌿 Turkey tail is next, thriving as the forest floor cools and moisture rises.

Fall’s crisp air and damp substrate create the perfect environment for these resilient mushrooms to flourish, marking the shift into a season of harvest and preparation. 🌲🍄

How is our Chaga more potent than others? It come How is our Chaga more potent than others?

It comes down to three powerful factors that set our wild-harvested Chaga apart — especially due to being sourced in the northern Ontario wilderness.

1️⃣ Wild Environment = Potency

Chaga grown in nature faces constant stress:

❄️ Sub-zero temperatures
🌳 Nutrient competition with other forest organisms
🖤 Its deep connection to birch trees — drawing in compounds directly from its host tree

These natural forces create a broader, richer profile of bioactive compounds that cultivated fungi simply can’t match.

2️⃣ Synergy in Bioactive Compounds

It’s not just one “magic” molecule — it’s the entourage effect.

Multiple compounds like sterols, polysaccharides, and antioxidants work in synergy to support immune health, reduce inflammation, and promote cellular repair. 💫 Studies show that wild fungi contains a broader range of sterols than its lab-grown counterparts, as well as higher antioxidant levels.

Together, they amplify the overall benefits of wild fungi.

3️⃣ Organic, Sustainable, Responsible Harvesting

We harvest far from industrial areas, using ethical practices that protect the forest and the future of the fungi.

Our team tracks data, monitors regrowth, and ensures we never overharvest — all to preserve the integrity of the ecosystem and the potency of the Chaga.

Why does this matter?

For businesses creating Chaga-based products, this means cleaner, more potent, and more effective ingredients.

And for your customers — it means powerful wellness that’s truly rooted in nature. 🍄

White pine pollen, bursting from the male cones. 🌲 White pine pollen, bursting from the male cones. 🌲💛

This golden dust only appears for a short window each spring, but it’s packed with nutrients. Pine pollen has been traditionally used to support energy, stamina, hormonal balance, and overall vitality — especially in men (hello testosterone and libido boost) 💪🏼💪🏼

It’s a true forest superfood.

While we don’t harvest or sell pine pollen ourselves, our friends over at @canadianpinepollen do an incredible job — sustainably wild-harvesting and sharing this potent m e d i c * i n e with care and respect.

And it’s not just white pine — different pine species across the country offer unique pollens. Out west, for example, Ponderosa pine pollen is known for its adaptogenic properties and bold flavour. Each variety carries its own personality and benefits, shaped by the land it grows on.

The white pine, known in Anishinaabe tradition as the Tree of Peace, gives generously — but only for those paying attention.

A brief moment. A powerful medicine. And a reminder of the abundance right at our feet.
In the quiet shade of the northern forest, you mig In the quiet shade of the northern forest, you might be lucky enough to spot her — the Lady’s Slipper. 🌸

Indigenous peoples have long recognized this rare wild orchid not only for her beauty, but for her m e d i c * n e. Traditionally, the root was used as a calming remedy — to ease anxiety, promote sleep, and support the nervous system. Some called it “mashkiki for the mind.”

But while her gifts were once used with deep respect, this plant has become too rare to harvest today.

If you live in Canada or the U.S., please do not pick or disturb Lady’s Slipper.

Most species are protected or endangered.

They grow slowly, take years to bloom, and rely on delicate fungal relationships in the soil to survive.

At TruNorth, we believe in honouring plant medicine through education, not extraction — and leaving endangered species rooted where they belong.

If you find one, pause. Admire. Make sure your pup doesn’t trample it ;) … and walk gently on. 💛

Yesterday evening, something beautiful happened on Yesterday evening, something beautiful happened on our land.

A cow moose emerged from the woods and stood with us for a few minutes —still, calm, and watching us just as curiously as we watched her.

In Anishinaabe teachings, the moose carries powerful medicine.

The cow moose represents fierce, protective motherhood—strong, quiet, and deeply intuitive.

If expecting a child, the appearance of a cow moose is seen as a guardian spirit or teacher of matriarchal strength.

Seeing her—especially while pregnant—is a sign that you are being guided and watched over.

As we prepare to welcome our first baby this fall, this encounter felt like more than coincidence.

A quiet blessing.

A sign that we are being watched over, guided, and grounded by something greater.

Moments like this remind us of how alive and sacred the land truly is.
This Earth Day, we honour the land that gave life This Earth Day, we honour the land that gave life to TruNorth.

Our work goes beyond harvesting mushrooms and processing Chaga.

It’s about listening to the forest, respecting its rhythm, and sharing the abundance it offers—without taking more than we give back.

We aim to connect others with natural medicine, ancestral wisdom, and the understanding that the Earth holds more than we often see.

Because when we learn to care for the land, it begins to care for us in return.
